TerraChange Solar accelerates the development of greenhouse solar panels with support from HIC
How do you combine sustainable energy generation with optimal plant growth? TerraChange Solar is building a revolutionary answer to that question: transparent, light-transmitting solar panels.
The challenge: from idea to proven impact
TerraChange Solar promises are ambitious. Their solar glass allows exactly the light wavelengths plants need for photosynthesis to pass through, while converting the remaining light into usable, clean electricity. This results in less heat inside the greenhouse, greater control over the internal climate, and an on-site energy source on the roof—without compromising crop growth.
But how do you guarantee that growth? That requires well-founded simulations, in-depth knowledge of light spectra, and eventually experience with greenhouse trials.
“Time is money. A real greenhouse trial takes months. Thanks to this collaboration, we can test faster and more purposefully using simulations first,” says Moritz Riede, CEO & Co-Founder of TerraChange Solar.
The solution: expert knowledge from Wageningen
Through the HIC expert voucher, TerraChange Solar was connected with a WUR expert. Together, they are conducting the simulations to provide insights into:
CO₂ uptake and yield under modified light compositions
Temperature and energy consumption in the greenhouse
The effects on the internal greenhouse climate in both Dutch and warmer climates
For TerraChange Solar, this research goes beyond technology. It is a strategic step toward credibility, investability, and market entry.
“If a renowned researcher confirms the benefits of our technology, it greatly helps in conversations with investors and potential customers,” says Moritz Riede.
